Information for SPCH 1315 – Public Speaking (8 week course)
There are some issues you need to consider for success in the online SPCH 1315 course. The main things to consider – this is an eight week course which means that have you multiple items due every week and you may need to submit work every day to keep up; the class is fully online so there is no requirement to come to campus or go to a testing center but this means you need consistent and daily access to the Internet (it does not matter if you have a PC or a Mac); you have access to all assignments from the first day of the course so you can always work ahead; you will deliver 5 speeches with at least five audience members required (or your speeches will receive a “0”); and, you need to have the ability to record and upload your speeches. To record speeches, students use the web cams on their computers, some smart phone cameras (depending on the quality – you should test your camera to determine if it will work) or handheld digital cameras. There are now many options for recording your speech including the formation of a video group with some of your class mates. There is no option to come to a class to deliver a speech, you must find your own audience.
I would not suggest that anyone take this class as their first attempt at online learning because of the short time line and the technology requirements. You need to be comfortable with online learning and be a self-motivator. If this describes you, then the class should work well for you.
If you plan to take the class, here is the course information that you need to get started:
Textbook: The Public Speaking Project – FREE online textbook.

I would strongly discourage anyone who does not have prior online experience from taking this course. It’s too intense for you to have time to adapt to online learning.
