Spring 2024 BIOL 2404 3E05 Class Information

The Spring 2024 BIOL 2404 3E05 class provides an awesome one semester anatomy and physiology experience and I hope you will enroll!  This spring semester course is a full-term class, 100% online and there are no campus meetings.  Unit materials, lab activities and testing are provided in D2L-Brightspace – the online teaching platform of Lone Star College.  Study materials include instructor written notes based on classroom lectures (including stories and funny ways to help you learn), exam reviews, chapter quizzes and class interaction in discussion forum activities to prepare for unit exams.  All lab resources are internet based and free, including Zygote Body (a Google creation) for virtual dissection, a virtual microscope, and brain and heart simulations which provide excellent visuals for an introductory course.  Internet based anatomy quizzes prepare you for lab tests too.  Exams and lab tests are given online using LockDown Browser and Respondus monitor and scheduled during three-day periods announced at the beginning of the semester in a course calendar. The testing software is provided by Lone Star College, and a practice quiz the first week of class will increase your comfort level with the testing experience.  For online testing in this class, a laptop and webcam (external or internal) are required.  If you are using a desktop computer, an external webcam is required.  Chromebooks and iPads are not compatible with LockDown Browser or Respondus and cannot be used for this class. If you are concerned about any requirements, please send an email to martha.p.newsome@lonestar.edu so we can work together.

The required textbook is Seeley’s Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology, 11th edition by Vanputte, and the LSC-Tomball college bookstore has the loose-leaf edition, ISBN 9781264131273.  There are alternatives to bookstore purchase online including ebook, hardcover edition, etc., and previous editions may be acceptable too. The Connect access card is not required.  Although the textbook is referenced during the first week of class, the first unit online instructor notes provide everything needed for the first unit exam and quiz preparation, so you can delay textbook purchase if needed until the second week of class. More information about the textbook is provided in the course introduction materials the first day of class – Tuesday, January 16.  The course syllabus is usually posted the week before classes begin. Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions, and I hope to “see” you in my class soon!
