Why do you teach?
I teach because I love the study of communication and teaching gives me the opportunity to share my passion and knowledge. I love using communication theory to make sense out of every day situations and teaching allows me to help students understand the elements of communication that are taking place around them every day.
What is your personal definition of a great teacher?
A great teacher is able to establish an environment that breeds learning and innovation. This environment is one of knowledge, understanding and respect. Beyond these things, a great teacher is able to connect with students from all different walks of life and make the course material interesting and applicable.
What do you believe about teaching and learning?
I believe that teaching must be adaptable and learning must be individualized. Effective teaching can be adapted to meet the individual learning needs of the students. Students are unique with varying needs and life experiences. In order to connect with as many students as possible, an educator must work to understand these differences and adapt lesson plans, examples, and activities accordingly.
How do I make your course interesting for your students?
Students have so much activity taking place outside of the classroom and teachers must constantly work to keep students interested. I attempt to make my course interesting for my students in three areas: (1) in-class activities that get them out of their seats and talking to other students, (2) encouraging students to make the material come alive through their own examples and real-life applications, and (3) the use of media and technology.
