Math 0308 On-Line Classes
Please read ALL of the following information.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR VETERANS
The VA (post 9/11 GI Bill) will NOT pay for online developmental classes. Please see a VA advisor to choose a developmental class that meets the VA’s requirements for tuition payment.
Is this the right class for me?
That decision should be yours based on the information I am giving you, but the short answer is that if you are not capable of TEACHING YOURSELF MATHEMATICS, an online math class is not the right format for you. You should pick a face-to-face format where you will have more support from an instructor. You also need a face-to-face format if you have always struggled with understanding mathematics. Finally, while you might be choosing an online class because of your busy schedule, you still need enough free time to teach yourself, work on (numerous) assignments, get tutoring if necessary, etc. If you truly have a packed schedule, you may need to wait until things calm down before attempting an online college math class. NOTE: If you are registering for a summer school class, the class will be accelerated. You will most likely have due dates every other day, and a test each week (In one of our Testing Centers). Carefully consider whether or not you will be able to keep up with this pace.
I did o.k in Math 0306. Does that mean I will also do well in Math 0308?
Maybe. Math 0306 included a review of basic skills (fractions, decimals, etc.), and these topics may have been easy for you to remember without doing a lot of work. Math o3o8 will be similar to your high school Algebra 1 and 2 class (solving equations/inequalities, graphing lines, FOIL method, factoring, etc.). You may have to study a bit harder, and practice a bit more in order to understand and retain the information.
Is this a self-paced course?
Not really. This course has a specific start and end date, as well as due dates for assignments and exams. Late work will not be accepted. Once the semester starts, you may work ahead, but you may not fall behind.
Does this format take less time than a traditional class?
No. In fact, for most students, it takes more time each week than a traditional class. You should plan on a minimum of 15 – 20 hours a week working on assignments, and studying.
Can I take my exams online?
Yes, but you must test in a proctored testing environment. In general, this means one of the LSC Testing Centers.
Will I need any special software?
You will need access to a piece of software called MyMathLab. This is a flash-based program, so it will run on most platforms (including Mac’s). This is NOT optional. You must have it by the beginning of class. NOTE: The cost of this access code is $90+. If you took your previous Math class anywhere except LSC-CyFair or LSC-Fairbanks, you will need a new code.
What type of computer skills do I need for this class?
Competent computer skills including Internet navigation skills are necessary. There will be no instruction regarding the use of a computer provided during this class. Students should already be comfortable with using a computer, including the keyboard, the mouse and email. Students should also have a reliable internet connection wherever they plan to work.
You also need good reading and comprehension skills. When using MyMathlab, if you don’t follow the directions for inputting your answers, your answer will be incorrect.
I have read the above information, and am interested in registering for the class. What do I do next?
Go ahead and register. You may contact me at susan.kautz@lonestar.edu if you have further questions.
