Grading & Attendance Policies

Transitional Studies Grading Procedures

and Attendance Policies

Letter Grade Assignment:

The following grading scale will be used to determine the final average in a transitional

course:

Final Average

Letter Grade

89.5 – 100

A

79.5 – 89.4

B

69.5 – 79.4

C

69 and below

IP or F

IP (In Progress):

In the developmental courses, a professor has the authority to give an IP or an “F” to a student whose average is 69 or below.  An IP is generally given when a student has attended class regularly but did not grasp the material well enough to receive a passing grade.  An IP allows students to repeat the course without having their grade point average affected.  Another advantage to receiving an IP is that it allows students to complete any transfer classes in which they are currently enrolled.  Also, an IP can be given to students who need to withdraw from the course but will need to complete the transfer-level courses.  By receiving an IP (instead of a “W”), students can continue and complete their transfer-level courses.  An IP remains on the transcript.

I (Incomplete):

An “I” is assigned as a result of incomplete work in a course.  To receive an I, 60% of the course should be completed.  Failure to complete the work within the specified time will result in an “F.”  The instructor will need to determine the deadline date.  Once the deadline date is established the student will need to sign an “I” contract with the instructor.

Attendance Policy

At LSC-Cy-Fair, we do not have a formal attendance policy.  Therefore, each instructor is given the flexibility to create an attendance policy that best fits the needs of his/her particular class.  Once an instructor has decided on an official policy, this information must be included in his syllabus.  It is very important that this information is stated in the syllabus so that all students are properly informed of an instructor’s attendance policy.  If a student has not been attending class regularly, we strongly encourage all instructors to attempt to contact that student before administratively withdrawing him from the class.
