Week 30: Even Just for Today by Madeleine Delaney and Elizabeth Huntington (Beautiful Freaks Publishing, 2010, Kindle Edition)

I read this book at the suggestion of a friend, whom I admire and respect as a writer. It’s a well-written story that effectively conveys the struggles of a couple facing an apocalyptic American destroyed by zombies (or as the book more appealing describes them, “unpeople”).

I’ll admit that I’m currently in a heavy anti-zombie (and anti-vampire) zone. With so many movies out, and with the recent novel bastardization of Pride and Prejudice (which I admittedly have not read yet), I find little of anything new in these genres. In so many ways, they’ve been played out. This makes me a jaded reader for this novel.

However, the authors do an effective job of keeping me interested in the story and what happens to them as they battle unpeople and other creatures (human and otherwise). The strength of the novel is the love story, though, between Adam and Tommy. Clearly, the apocalypse is a vehicle for letting these two friends and bandmates explore a more intense relationship. The authors treat this relationship with deep respect and care, and this gives the novel is emotional core.

While ultimately this novel is not my “thing” in content (zombies) or character (famous musicians), it was a worthwhile read for the writing.

Next week . . . Roofwalker by Susan Power.
