Explorations Along the Edge of Belize
Belize Study Abroad is a field study program for students interested in rainforest, coastal, and coral reef ecology, and the science of the environment with an emphasis on how humans interact with the environment. This is an experiential program – immersed in rainforest and marine environments – literally. A real adventure!
Mission: The core mission of this program is to investigate issues related to social and ecological sustainability in an effort to better understand the modern challenges of environmental conservation in the developed and developing world.
Dates: 3 Week May Mini (May 16 – June 3, 2016)
Belize Travel: 13 Days (May 21 – June 2, 2016)
Course: GEOG.1301 Physical Geography (3 cr/hr)
Cost: $2600 (air, ground transportation, lodging, meals, and activities)
Deadline to Apply: March 1, 2016 (payment in full due)
Program Cap: 12 Students (space is limited)

SCUBA: One of the optional activities will be SCUBA – I encourage students not already certified to consider SCUBA to fully experience the MesoAmeican Barrier Reef ecosystem. This is a chance of a lifetime to explore and experience a coral reef ecosystem like no other. Certification takes about two weeks and costs about $450. Sea Sports Scuba (290/Barker Cypress Rd.) will have a classes in March and April for students interested in certification. http://www.seasportsscuba.com/northwest.htm

As part of the mission of the program, Belize study abroad students will have the opportunity to exhibit travel photography based on themes of social and ecological sustainability.
The exhibition serves two objectives:
1) conservation awareness efforts
2) fundraising effort – student work will be auctioned with proceeds going to conservation efforts in the Blue Creek Rainforest Reserve in Belize’s Mayan Mountains.

The Belize Study Abroad program is also available for students interested in pursuing Honors Contracts. This is an exciting opportunity for students interested in applied research focusing on the science of the environment, conservation, political policy and the environment, and even the aesthetic of physical environments for art students.
